This 1953 Hudson Hornet is part of a true motoring legend. So to have such a complete example that has all the right pieces - right down it's numbers-matching H-power motor - is a real treat.
The Hornet was the ultimate expression of a new era at Hudson. The body was specially built to be channeled over the frame to give it an extra low stance, and the sheetmetal was pure jet-age streamlining. And when they're this special, you can occasionally find an example like this that has been treated with such respect. That's why the panels line up nicely and the doors close with confidence. And we all love the brightwork. The intricate grille, wraparound bumpers, factory wheel covers, special Hornet badging, and full-length trim that zooms past the covered rear wheels - it all has a great look of vintage cool. Even the details are great, like the sun visor and the center antenna between and two-piece windshield. Description
And it's all finished off in a classic two-tone of a glossy Meadow Green with Surf Green roof section.
The step-down body meant this looks low and sleek while still offering plenty of space inside. Hornets were known for some of the most distinctive cloth interior around, and the restoration in 2009 made sure that tradition continues. The pattern coordinates with the rest of the sea of green inside for a terrific look, and the fresh feeling makes it a fantastic cruiser. In fact, while this is truly vintage, there are some well-integrated upgrades for enjoying road trips. For example, while the factory AM radio is on display, the real tunes are from a Kenwood AM/FM radio. Plus, there was an R134a air conditioning system installed during the restoration (it will need servicing to blow cold.) But what will really have you hooked is the tingle of nostalgia that comes from slipping behind the classic steering wheel with Hudson center cap. The full dash has artful gauges, and there's even a classic traffic light viewer prism on the dash.
Under the hood, the golden block really likes to showcase the special motor. Hudson's 308 cubic-inch straight-six was famous for being the largest six-cylinder motor of the era. Hudson fans know the importance of those two bold red air grabbers for dual carb Twin-H Power. This is the numbers-matching motor, and it was rebuilt in 2009. It was even converted to 12-volt power for better electrics and convenience. So you get an ideal mixture of show-ready style and practical driving fun. The motor fires up nicely with a great low tone. The Hydramatic transmission shifts nicely and even includes overdrive. There's even a front disc brake upgrade to ensure this legendary Hudson remains is a nice cruiser.
