1981 Datsun 280ZX

The market for classic Japanese import sports cars is really heating up. We first loved them for their reliability, and now that nostalgia has set in, we want to re-capture that old magic. So it's especially important to find a loaded and preserved example like this 1981 Datsun 280ZX.

The Orange Mist Metallic paint on this car shows the right signs to be the original application. It sets a good tone for a car that appears both largely stock and well preserved. This one has a garage-kept look with a well-coordinated style golden pinstripe that highlights the well-fitting panels down the profile and the power bulge of the hood. The 280ZX was not only quick, but it's also comfortable. This means a long list of desired features, including power windows, power rear defogger, and cruise control, and the factory AM/FM/cassette stereo. There are even provisions for factory air conditioning (it will need servicing to function again.) Of course, don't think we forgot about the T-tops! These are like magnets constantly attracting you to take out the glass and go for a wind-in-your-hair drive.

The fuel-injected 2.8-liter motor is a legendary smooth and rev-happy powerhouse that helped establish Datsun/Nissan as an exciting brand of cars. It has the look of vintage, right down to the decals, but the condition of the belts, wires, and other fundamentals also suggest proper care. The SOHC inline-six fires up easily and makes a wonderful baritone wail that's a big part of the early Z's allure. Taking this classic out on the road rewards you with the sports car harmony of the five-speed manual transmission, fully independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.
