1968 AMC AMX

Description

This 1968 AMC AMX represents the first year of a performance car revolution at AMC. So it's great to find an example that is a nice mix of vintage style and the right driver-ready feel so that it's easy to enjoy.

The AMX was an individual sports car on a shortened Javelin platform, and the rare bespoke bodywork from the A-pillar continues to look distinct and sporty. Plus, these had the best details around with ribbed power domes in the hood, flared fenders, mag wheels, ribbed rockers, and a hint of flying buttress in the rear to draw added attention to the fastback-like profile. And with a muscle car this significant, it's nice to have it looking bold in red. The finish has a nice luster without getting so fancy that you'd be afraid to drive it, after all, the point of a car like this is to enjoy it out on the road. It's the kind of classic that can impress when it's out in the world because there's a clean and complete style with form-hugging chrome bumpers, a wide grille, and all the correct badging.

The interior continues both the bold and vintage style with the bright red interior. There are nice classic details, including the wood-like trim on the doors, AMC floor mats, stock AM radio used for a display, and working courtesy lights. There are even provisions for factory air conditioning (it will need servicing to blow cold again.) And while this is highly stock, it also looks like they replaced some of the essentials over the years like the carpeting and dash pad. But the real attraction is that the AMX was specifically built to be a driver's car. That's why there's only room for two, and you each get a bucket seat. The center console, three-spoke steering wheel, power steering, and full gauge package are both stock and sporty.

Under the hood is the correct-style 290 cubic-inch motor for this N-code coupe. AMC's V8 has earned a reputation for being both trusty and powerful. You have a bright Edelbrock air grabber and nice blue block paint for a touch of flair in case you feel like showing this one-off. But overall, you can tell it's built for driving. The four-barrel carburetor lets this V8 inhale deeply, and it makes a sweet sound out of the dual exhaust and newer mufflers. It fires up easily, drives nicely, and the three-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. So it makes for a distinct muscle car that's also a solid cruiser.
